The Creek: Restoring Nature, Building Resilience

Restoring Rocky Branch for Raleigh’s Future

One of the most ambitious projects in the Dix Park Master Plan is underway: The Creek, the restoration and enhancement of Rocky Branch along Western Boulevard.

Once a thriving stream that supported diverse plants and wildlife, Rocky Branch is now a federally recognized impaired waterway, suffering from pollution and damaged ecosystems. The Creek project is changing that—reintroducing health, beauty, and resilience to this vital landscape.

Why It Matters

Rocky Branch is part of the larger Walnut Creek Watershed, which helps manage stormwater, reduce flooding, and protect drinking water for our community.

In urban areas, stormwater pipes funnel runoff into creeks, often carrying pollution and causing erosion. The Creek project introduces green stormwater infrastructure—natural systems like wetlands, stormwater ponds, and permeable surfaces—to slow, filter, and clean water before it reenters the creek. These improvements will:

  • Combat flooding
  • Improve water quality
  • Create new habitats for plants and wildlife
  • Strengthen resilience for Raleighs future

Building on a Strong Foundation

In 2021, the Rocky Branch Feasibility Study began with an in-depth look at the creek and surrounding landscape. Completed in 2024, the study provided a data-driven roadmap for:

  • Improving water quality
  • Mitigating flood impacts on the park and downstream
  • Restoring wildlife habitats
  • Showcasing Piedmont ecology
  • Creating new community connections

The study also divided the 50-acre Creek project into three sections, to be restored in phases over the next decade.

Next Step: The Creek & Grove

The first phase—The Creek & Grove—began design in July 2025. Focused on the section between S. Boylan Avenue and S. Saunders Street, this phase will:

  • Restore the creek channel and floodplain
  • Add new pathways, a boardwalk, and gathering areas
  • Create visitor amenities up the hill through the Grove
  • Connect Downtown Raleigh and Gipson Play Plaza

This phase sets the tone for the larger Creek project, showcasing how a restored Rocky Branch can become a peaceful nature escape in the heart of Raleigh.

The Creek is more than a project—it’s a commitment to building a healthier, more sustainable future for Dix Park and Raleigh. Stay tuned for updates as design moves forward of this transformative project!
