Goat eating vegetation at Dix Park in the Grove

Hungry goats clear invasive species at Dix Park

Meet Dix Park’s newest landscapers—Bernie, Pastrami, and friends!

As of last week, a herd of goats began to clear vegetation in an area of The Grove project in collaboration between Raleigh Parks and the Dix Park Conservancy's Artist in Residence project.

This initiative is a sustainable and cost-effective way for to manage vegetation in the park and the before and after is impressive! Clearing overgrown areas is needed not only to make the park look nicer, but also improve visibility and safety for park visitors.

To keep the goats safely inside their designated area, they are contained with a low-voltage solar-powered electric fence. The goats have GPS collars on that let the goats know when they are close to the fence. A second fence is installed around the goats’ work zone to create an additional barrier to separate park visitors from the goats while allowing community members to watch them work.

Make sure to stop by The Grove and check them out! The project is anticipated to conclude on June 12th.
